Sighle Bhreathnach-Cashell
Sighle Bhreathnach-Cashell (b. Belfast 1985) is a visual artist specialising in interactive installation. She is a studio holder at Array and a member of the Array Collective. She has a BA Hons in Environmental Art from the Glasgow School of Art and an MFA from the Piet Zwart Institute.
The basis for her work is an interest in how the environment (physical/social/fictional) affects our behaviour and sense of identity. This has played out in various forms like dark dinner parties, bespoke bedrooms, interrogating waiting rooms and fixed game shows.
Currently she is working on the project ‘Scripted Cities.’ This looks at how narratives of cities are created, reshaped and sold, and how this affects the identities and fantasies of their inhabitants and visitors. So far this film-based work spans Belfast, Huis Ten Bosch in Japan, New York and Rotterdam.
Sighle is one half of the artist duo DUNCAN along with Glasgow based artist Richard Martin.
As part of the Belfast Film Festival 2020 they staged ‘The Occasional Man’. This immersive film installation followed their protagonist 'Duncan', a recently retired Glaswegian embarking on a failed attempt to become an actor. The audience was guided through scenes from his disillusioned life, across several rooms of the former UTV Studios at Havelock House (Flax Art Studios).
Sighle has often collaborated with others to co-organise events, workshops, club nights and residencies with groups such as: residence, Jive Apocalypse, Platform Arts, Procedure, GAMES NIGHT! and Household.
